Who invented tennis? It will be difficult to say. There are several stories about the invention of tennis. Some people believe that there are different types of tennis played by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. There is no all descriptions or drawings of any tennis-like games, but a couple of old-time Egyptian Arabic words are cited as evidence in some manuscripts. The word tennis, is estimated to be learned from the French words such as tenders (to take), hold (to take) or keep (the holding of this). The exact origins of the term are unknown. The term racket (snowshoe) is apparently evolved from Arabic Rahat, which means palm of the hand. In fact, the racket was invented in Italy in the year 1583.
Various ball games and racket such as tennis (USA), real tennis (United Kingdom), and royal tennis (Australia) comes from a 12th century palm Thursday, which means palm. Palm was a game played on a court where the ball was struck with the hand. Palm evolved into play tennis (playing tennis) snowshoes were used.
In 1873, a game known as Sphairistik (a Greek word which means ball) was invented by Major Walter C. Wingfield, from which the outdoor tennis modern has evolved. He first played the game Wale to a garden party. In 1874, he formulated the rules of lawn tennis. In addition, the same year he patented equipment and rules to London, which was very similar to modern tennis. After his invention, the fixed equipment has been marketed for use in Canada, China, India and Russia.
The top tennis-like game was played on an hourglass-shaped court, broader service line and closer to the net. In creating the new game Sphairistik, Wingfield adopted in much of the tennis-like older games.
Later, the game spread to Europe. Lawn tennis quickly became popular in Great Britain. Soon the game was played in many parts of England. At Wimbledon, the All England Croquet Club organized the first World Championship Tennis in the year 1877. During this period, the game was restricted to male players. Later, on Thursday became the famous Wimbledon for the British National Championship. Nevertheless, it is one of the most esteemed events in tennis. In 1884, inaugurated a Wimbledon tennis championship for women. Soon, women tennis has become popular in different regions of the British Empire, especially in Australia.
Tennis spread to various parts of the United States by Bermuda. A friend of Wingfield introduced tennis Mary Ewing Outerbridge of New York in the year 1874. The men first national championship was held in Newport, RI during the year 1881. Six years later, tennis championship for women has begun.
